He began sculpting sand in 1964 at age six, under the tutelage of his father Frank, an avid amateur sand sculptor. At New Smyrna Beach, on the East coast of Florida where he grew up. Just steps from Atlantic Ocean beach that features a very fine grained, excellent sculpting quality sand.
Rich won the first amateur contest he entered in 1971, and the first pro class 'Masters' competition he entered in 1988. He has since won literally dozens of International awards at shows around the world, including nine awards at the World Championships, where he is also undefeated in the 'Best Architecture' and 'Hand Stacked' category. His work is usually the popular favorite in competition for the "People's Choice" Award. Holding numerous records, his competition statistics will proportionately stand against any.
He now owns a home in Orlando Florida and tours the globe creating his works for clients ranging from private individuals, to blue chip corporations such as Anhueser Busch, Disney, IBM, Microsoft, and Fugifilm, to cities like Fort Lauderdale, USA. and Jesolo, Venice, Italy.
His work has been displayed on television features and in
commercials, print ads in magazines, and has been the subject of countless
articles and periodicals on five continents. He exhibits at festivals and
special events of all sorts. He also teaches the craft to groups and individuals
all over the world.
Rich Varano is available by appointment for commissions in
sand sculpture. He also has associates worldwide for projects in remote
locations or on very grand scales. He is as deeply networked in the industry
as anyone.
